Cell phones have changed society drastically, and especially with kids, cell phones are becoming an increasingly bigger part of day to day life. The Pew Research Center did a study that found 75% of kids 12-17 have a cell phone. Mid-Prairie Middle School has found an interesting way of dealing with cell phones in schools.Principal Nancy Hurd says that about 45% of the kids at her school have a cell phone, and in the past they were required to turn their phones off when they got to school in the morning. But this semester, after hearing a request from the student council, they have started to let kids use their phones in the morning before class. Principal Hurd says so far it’s working. Kids are using the phones in the morning, and not using them once class starts. She thinks that taking away the mystique around using cell phones in school has helped get kids to not want to use them as much. She also thinks that because the kids know that the staff has listened to their ideas they feel more responsible to follow the rules. She says they haven’t had any problems yet, but they’ve only allowed the phones for a few weeks, so they will have to see if it continues to be a system that works.
