Proposed Bill Could Change County Redistricting Procedures

Recently, Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz introduced a bill that could change the way County Supervisor redistricting plans could be challenged.  This bill would mean the Legislative Services Agency would draw the map for the redistricting plan based on a percentage of signatures of total votes cast in a general election.  Washington County Supervisor Jim Miksch says Washington County has had the districts changed two times.

He says when the districts needed to be changed people from both political parties were chosen who followed the state code and worked with county officials to find districts that would meet the proper requirements.

Supervisor Miksch says since Washington County has a smaller population many residents are familiar with what is happening and a challenge of new districts most likely would not happen.  Secretary Schultz says that the current system needs to change but local control needs to be a key part of the redistricting plans.
