Residents who are interested in getting started in keeping bees have an opportunity to take advantage of a course being offered by the Iowa Honey Producers Association starting Monday. Currently in Iowa, about 1500 beekeepers manage around 30,000 colonies of honeybees that produce about two million pounds of honey each year totaling three and a half million dollars.
Carol Wehr says this class will cover the basics of beekeeping from building hives to the life cycles of bees and how to manage them. Wehr says eight people have signed up for the class so far and they are looking for more to join.
The classes will be held all four Mondays in February. The cost is $39 plus course materials. The class will begin Monday and to sign up, contact the Kirkwood Washington Center.
