The Washington boys’ basketball team opens up postseason play tonight at home against Keokuk. The Demons (13-8) split the season series against their conference opponent, winning 56-51 on the road in mid-December before falling at home three weeks ago 71-61. Washington, playing some of their best basketball as of late, has won four of their last five games including a 58-49 win over Grinnell on Friday. Keokuk (12-9) has won four of their last six games with losses coming at 4A Ottumwa and against Quincy Notre Dame.
Demon head coach Bryce Smeins says perimeter defense will be key in the outcome Monday night.
“Number one, we cannot let them get going from three-point range. If (Dan) Williams and (Dimitre) Galbreath get hot, and (Jonny) Dahl get’s hot it could be a tough night; then you’ve got (Kevin) Jennings and (Kendall) Clark by themselves underneath. So number one goal is to try to contain their perimeter game, and then on offense we’ve got to attack. We had a terrible time against their defense last time. I’m assuming we’ll see the same look and we’ve spent a lot of time preparing for that. We’ve put some different (offensive sets) in for them but until you run it you’re not sure (if it will work). The game can’t get into the 70’s and 80’s, it needs to be in the 40’s and 50’s and we need to control tempo.”
Tip-off is set for 7:00 tonight. Keota girls basketball coach Jenny Hobbs joins Jason Troop on the call on KCII Radio and kciiradio.com with the Washington Hy-Vee pregame show starting at 6:30.
