Washington Man Convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor

Alexander Mendoza Ortega, an 18 year old from Washington, was convicted of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree this afternoon. Mendoza Ortega was accused of performing a sex act through the use of force or against the will of a 14 year old female resident of Washington County on July 24th of 2011.

House Passes Bill to Reform Commercial Property Taxes

As previously reported, lawmakers are looking at reducing the percent of taxes collected from commercial properties from 100 to 40%. On Tuesday, the House has passed the bill to lower the commercial property tax, but the Senate Democratic Leader says the bill won’t get the support of the Senate’s Democratic majority.

Wellman Still Under Boil Order

The City of Wellman had a water main break on Monday. The main was repaired Tuesday night, and water services were restored around 7:30 pm. There is still a boil order in effect, most likely until Friday. Washington County Public Health is recommending residents of Wellman boil their water for at least two minutes before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and giving to pets.

Legislators Debate Legality of Police Use of GPS Devices

Legislators are looking at the legality of police attaching GPS devices to suspects’ cars. The devices could be placed on someone’s car once a judge issues a warrant, and could be used for 30 days. According to Sergeant Jason Bell with the Southeast Iowa Inter Agency Drug Task Force, the GPS devices are already used and are very effective tools in narcotics cases.
