The number of registered Republicans jumped in Iowa around the caucuses. Across the state, the number of registered Republicans grew by 14,000. Sue Meeks, the Elections Clerk in Washington County, says our county has seen a jump too. She says its nothing new, usually parties see an increase when they have presidential election polls on a caucus year.

They see a lot of no party voters register with a particular party so they can participate in the caucus, and many of those who switched go back to no party afterward so that they don’t receive calls and mail about the party.

There were 5533 registered Republicans in Washington County in January, 3217 registered Democrats, and 5208 no party voters.
