Area teams took place in sectional meets over the weekend.

Clear Creek-Amana Sectional (2A)

The Washington wrestling team traveled to Clear Creek-Amana for their 2A sectional meet and finished in second place, good enough to advance to the regional duals 12.5 points behind Williamsburg’s 229.  Fairfield finished third with 188 and Benton was fourth with 164.  Clear Creek and Mid-Prairie finished fifth and six respectively with 120 and 100 points each.

13-of-14 Demon wrestlers made it to the semi-finals and five are headed to districts.  Fletcher Green was the sectional champion at 106 pounds while Tristan Pohren won the championship at 113.  Mitchell Hora was the sectional champion at 132 pounds and Brad Skubal did it as well at 160.  Parker Turner won a wrestle-back match over Fairfield’s Aaron Gevock to finish second at 145, becoming the fifth Demon wrestler to head to district play this season.  The individuals wrestle in districts at Fairfield Saturday.  The dual team regional takes place tomorrow night in Williamsburg as the Demons face top-ranked Denver-Tripoli.  The winner sees the winner of the Williamsburg/Union meet with a trip to state on the line.

Mid-Prairie wrestled as well but it is hard to believe their hearts and minds were in it, following the car crash that killed both of wrestler Chase Murray’s parents, injuring his 18-year-old sister, en-route to the meet on Saturday.  Nicole was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital, her condition has not been released.

Despite the tragedy, the Golden Hawks did have one wrestler qualify for districts.  Nearoth Peterschmidt took home the championship at 182.

The individual qualifiers will square off at Fairfield on Saturday with the winners of the West Burlington/Notre Dame sectional.
