There is a statewide program available in Washington County that helps with the importance of dental hygiene.  Sheila Temple, a Registered Dental Hygienist with Washington County Public Health says they offer different screenings as part of their I-Smile Program.  She says this program is a dental initiative to help children on Medicaid find a dental home.

Temple says dental screenings are provided by a network of health care professionals to supplement Iowa’s dental workforce.  She notes they will also assist in children receiving the required dental screenings needed before children enter elementary and high school.

These requirements became effective July 1, 2008 as a way to improve the oral health of Iowa’s children.  To find out more about the I-Smile program, contact Washington County Public Health.
