A hog confinement building has been counted as a total loss because of a fire yesterday afternoon. According to the Washington County Safety Center, a call was received about 12:30 of a building on fire.
Kalona Fire Chief Steve Yotty says the 20 foot by 30 foot building housed 12 sows and approximately 100 piglets. He says five of the sows were able to escape, but the remaining hogs did not.
Yotty is estimating about 15 to 20 thousand dollars in loss. He says the investigation is still ongoing to find the cause.
Those responding to the scene were the Kalona Fire Department, Kalona First Responders, Riverside Fire Department, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, REC Electric Company as well as New Alliance Farm Service Gas Company. KCII will bring you more information when it becomes official.
