Seven girls’ track and field teams traveled to Columbus Community Friday night to kick-off the outdoor season, and the Washington Demons did so in dominating fashion, winning the event by 77 points over the host Wildcats.
The Demons scored 166 points, winning four of the seven relay events and getting first-place individual performances from Joni Erwin, Lauren Kimball, Sarah Greiner, and Kaitlin Buchholz. Head coach Howard Bean was happy with the results.
“The kids did a really fine job last night. We scored a lot of points. We were able to put kids in (almost) every event and we had two in every individual event and were able to get points out of just about every event.”
Erwin took the top spot in the shot-put and finished second in the discus while Kimball took first with a five foot even high jump. Greiner finished just ahead of teammate Sydney Hoffman for first in the 800 meter run while Buchholz and Kimball finished 1-2 in the 400 hurdles.
Columbus Community finished in second with 89 points as Heaven Chandler led the way with first-place finishes in the long jump (16’ 4 1/2”), 100 meter hurdles (15.81), and 100 dash (12.12). The Wildcats’ Megan Pretz won the 200 meter dash (27.80) as the team brought home the title in the 4 x 800 relay.
As a team, Highland finished in third with second place finishes in five relay races. Alison Sojka posted the best individual result for the Huskies with her top time in the 400 meter dash (1:09.40).
