KCII recently had the opportunity to interview Senator Chuck Grassley. We talked about a variety of issues during this call. Grassley has introduced legislation geared toward helping independent livestock producers get a fair price on their product. The main point of the bill would be to forbid large packing plants from owning livestock. Senator Grassley tells us that packing plants owning their own livestock make it difficult for farmers to get a fair price on their livestock. He says he’s been told by packing plant officials that they own livestock so that when prices are high, they can use their own livestock, and when prices are low, that’s when they buy from independent producers. Grassley’s proposed legislation would allow packing plants to use the livestock they currently own, but not add any new livestock to their herd. Hear more from Senator Grassley during our In Touch program today. It’s the second of two parts, find the first part of the interview at kciiradio.com
