License Plates in Iowa have stayed largely the same for 13 years. But later this year, the IDOT expects to run out of the “number then letter” series of plates, and will switch to plates with letters first. Treasurer Jeff Garrett says the DOT doesn’t know exactly when the switch will occur, and it will likely vary by county because each county has a stock they will have to get rid of before they issue the new plates. He says now they are focusing on getting old plates renewed and one more change to the plates, although less noticeable. He says they are switching from blue letters and numbers to black ones at the request of law enforcement, who say it’s easier to read the black writing. KCII will let you know when Washington County is ready to make the switch.
