The 2011-2012 boys’ basketball season wrapped up on Saturday with the class 3A and 4A state championship games.

In class 3A, Mt. Pleasant’s Blake Vandenburg hit two free throws at the end of regulation to force overtime with Epworth (24-3) after they outscored the Panthers (26-2) 15-5 in the final quarter.  Dalton Conrad nailed a three with five second left in the first extra period to force a second overtime.  After a free throw gave the Bobcats a one point lead early in the second OT, Vandenburg gave the Panthers the lead with a three point play that they would not relinquish.  Jordan Ashton led Mt. Pleasant with 20 points and Vandenburg posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Panthers shot 56% for the game.

Iowa City West took a 39-23 lead at the half against Sioux City East then played a relatively even game in the second half to grab the state championship by a final of 67-52.  West scored 29 points off 23 forced turnovers.  Jeremy Morgan poured in a game-high 26 points for the Trojans who become the fourth team in state history to win both the girls and boys state championships in the same season.
