The sun is approaching its peak of activity in its eleven-year solar cycle and it is affecting some things here on Earth.  Area utility crews are keeping a close watch on the solar flares says Alliant Energy Media spokesperson Ryan Stensland.

He says when solar flares occur they monitor their systems and work with other regional organizations to make sure the electric grid remains stable. Stensland says that they are ready in case any services were to be disrupted because of the flares.

While utility crews may be vigilant in making sure the power stays on, the flares are providing a bonus for those who like to star gaze.  The solar flares currently happening are strong enough they are causing the Northern Lights to appear further south than normal.

If the sky remains clear tonight, the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are high.
