A Washington Elementary School that is hoping to be part of the Safe Routes to School Project is looking for help with the grant initiative.  Washington County Public Health Nurse Lynn Fisher says volunteers are needed to help map the routes students take to and from school. Principal Dave Hoffman says they are part of the Safe Routes to School Project as a way for children to be safe as well as healthy.

He says this program started after they installed a sidewalk around the school building to get the kids out and walking during the school day.  Principal Hoffman says when this idea was presented to him, school staff was excited since this was a way to get kids to walk and bike to school.

Volunteers will be needed on Wednesday, March 28th from 11:00 to 3:00.  The information from this route mapping will be used in the grant writing process in October.  The Safe Routes to School Project at Lincoln is similar to the same project happening in Kalona.
