The Ekstrand Relays took place last night in Wayland and the Washington Demons picked up the win in the class A division of the coed meet, edging West Burlington/Notre Dame by 20 points behind a first-place finish by the Demon girls’. Sigourney finished sixth out of the 11 teams in the A division. Host WACO took the top spot in the class B division ahead of second place Lone Tree who was followed by Highland and WMU, respectively.
Class A
The Washington girls’ posted top finishes in four events with the 4×800 relay team literally running away from the field. Senior Regan Enfield took first in the 400 hurdles and 400 meter dash while sophomore Dema Giardino won at the tape over Sigourney’s Becca Ohland by one-one hundredth of a second. The Savages’ Jerica Gretter finished first in the high jump at 4’8”.
On the boys side, the Demons’ Logan Moeller and Maverick Goodwin went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles while the 4×100 relay team continued a strong showing this season with another first place finish. The Demons finished fourth in the class A boys’ meet.
Class B
WACO won the small school division with several solid performances, including Brooke Hammond’s first place finish in the 400 and 800 and the relay teams’ top spot in the 4×800. It was Lone Tree winning the girls half of the meet though, placing first in the 800 medley and 4×100 relay with individuals Ella Feldman winning the 3000 meter run and freshman Makenzie Reynolds taking the shot put.
On the boys’ side WACO’s Brett Hesseltine won the 100, Klinton Garrett and Alan Hesseltine went 1-2 in the 800 while Christian Roth took both hurdle events and the relay teams took the 4×100, 4×800, and the 4×100 shuttle. Kendall Leichty won the shot put with a throw just under 42 feet.
