The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks girls’ soccer team had struggled in recent seasons against West Liberty, including a loss last year, but this is a new year, a new team, and for the first time in the 10 years of the program, Mid-Prairie opened the season with a shutout by knocking off the Comets 10-0.

Less than three minutes into the game, Sofia Chmaruk booted a ball into the back of the old onion bag and the team took off.  By halftime it was already 9-0.  Chmaruk finished with a hat trick, Meghan Redlinger, Kira Kerkove, and Ali Riggen each scored two tallies while Kattie Redlinger knotched a goal herself.  Mid-Prairie limited West Liberty to just five shots on goal.

Needless to say, head coach Bristol Harris was impressed with his girls.

“It was great to watch the girls all working together as a team! It sometimes takes three or four games to see them come together the way they played tonight!”

The Golden Hawks won’t have much time to enjoy this win.  They are back on the pitch today against the rival Demons in Washington.
