There is a statewide tornado drill today for severe weather awareness week. The drill will happen today at 10am. Mid-Prairie Schools will be taking part in this drill, and Superintendent Mark Schneider says that even though schools are sturdy buildings that are safer than most other locations, they can still take damage from tornadoes and students need to be prepared to get into safe locations within the school. He says the safest places in a school are usually bathrooms and classrooms without windows. The schools handle drills differently for different age groups. Younger children can get scared during the drill so they try to make sure the children understand it’s only a drill. Older kids take the drills more seriously when there is a chance for actual severe weather. If there is a chance for severe weather today, the drill will be moved to tomorrow.
