Today is the last day last year’s taxes will be accepted.  Christopher Miller with the Internal Revenue Service says filings were first being accepted in January and the deadline to file taxes is today because of the 15th falling on a Sunday and yesterday was Emancipation Day in Washington, DC.  Miller reminds everyone that filing electronically is safe.

Kay Arvidson, Assistant Public Information Officer for the Iowa Department of Revenue says filers could begin filing in Iowa in January as well.  She says over 85% of Iowans filed their taxes electronically last year which led the country in the percentage of taxpayers not using paper returns.

The deadline to file federal returns is today and in Iowa the deadline is April 30th.
