Day 1 of the state track and field meet finished up yesterday, and many area athletes competed. . In the field events, the boys long jump Mid-Prairie’s Jaemin Powell finished tenth with a jump of 20’6”, and Ricky Rivers of Columbus Junction fouled on all three of his jumps. In the 3A high jump Jake Redlinger finished in a three way tie for eighth with a jump of 6′ even. Heaven Chandler took home a state championship in the Long Jump for Columbus Junction in the 2A girls meet. Her jump of 18’1.25” was her last jump of the day and her best giving her the gold. During her long jump, Washington’s Lauren Kimball finished sixth in the high jump with a lead of 5’2”.

In the running events the Washington girls shuttle hurdle team finished twelfth in the prelims with a time of 1:10.61. Heaven Chandler qualified in the 100 meter dash for the finals qualifying with a time of 12.93 sec, while in 3A Dema Giardino finished 22 in the prelims with a time of 14.04 sec. Jaemin Powell of Mid- Prairie also qualified in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.7 seconds.

In the 2A 400 meter dash Catie Chaney of Columbus finished 20th with a time of 1:03.6, while Stephanie Fishback of Washington finished 12th in the 3A 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.77. In the Boys 400 meter dash Mid Prairies Ryan Hoffman was just outside placing finishing 9th with a time of 50.83. Finally, in the morning group of 2A and 3A, The Washington Boys shuttle hurdle team finished 22nd with a time of 1:03.62 seconds.

In the afternoon for 1A.
The WACO boys shuttle hurdle team finished 15th with a time of 1:02.69. A couple of distance runners had their chance as Lone Tree’s Ella Feldman finished 19th with a time of 11:52.79 in the 3,000 meter run. In the boys 3200 meter run Matt Eden of Highland finished 23rd with a time of 11:33.35. In the girls 100 meter dash prelims Madelyn Flemr finished 14th with a time of 13.65.

In the girls 4×800 meter relay, WACO finished 24th with a time of 10:41.26 and in the boys Keota finished with a medal getting 8th place with a time of 8:30.29. In the girls 400 meter dash Highlands Allison Sojka finished 14th with a time of 1:01.92. In the boys, Max Fricke of WMU finished 19th with a time of 53.16 and Riley Stumpf of Lone Tree finished 21st with a time of 53.61. In the final running event of the day for the 1A schools, The WMU girls shuttle hurdle team qualified fourth with a time of 1:08.6. IN the field events, Lou Krieger-Coen finished 17th in the shot put with a throw of 33’9.5”.
