The Washington softball team starts their season today with a home opener against Columbus Junction. The Demons were 20-17 last year, while the Wildcats were 13-15. The Demons will be very familiar with each other despite not having everyone due to other sports as they bring back everyone but one player. Head coach Angie Shrader says although every game is important, the first game is very early in the season.
“Of our kids who are dressing varsity we have not had all of them at practice at the same time,” Shrader said. “Tonight’s kind of one of those, to put it nicely, kind of a glorified practice for us because we have to figure out who is going to fit in where and in what lineup.”
Shrader did say that the opening day pitcher will be Maddie Bohr. Bohr had a record of 12-8 with a 3.01 ERA and 63 strike outs last season. Shrader says it is nice to be at home at the beginning of the season finally.
“It’s great to play at home especially since last year we had to wait until the middle of June when we got to have a home game last year because of our diamond being built,” Shrader said. “We had to play our first 10 or 12 games in a row, plus we had a lot of rain and we had to move to different dates. It will be very awesome to play at home, especially on the first night that we’re supposed to be playing at home.”
Pregame will start at 7:15pm and first pitch at 7:30 tonight.
