The area 2012 softball season led off with a clash of the top softball teams in 3A as #1 Solon visited #2 Mid-Prairie Monday night. Solon used a big first inning to take a 5-1 lead and continued to pile on en route to a 14-1 win a shortened six inning game. Mid-Prairie pitching struggled on the night as starter Olivia Lugar was lifted in an 10-1 game in the 5th for Felicia Schulty. Lugar took the loss surrendering 10 runs, seven of them earned on nine hits. It was also a rough night for the Mid-Prairie defense who committed four errors behind their staff. Arron Weeces held down the Golden Hawk offense all night after surrendering a first inning tally on two walks and four wild pitches. Mid-Prairie did not get their first hit until Schulty’s lead off single in the 6th. Weeces recorded the win going all six innings in the win striking out 10. Following the game Head Coach Justin Lutjen talked about what his team can take from this game moving forward.

“We go up to Clear Creek, I imagine they are preseason number one in the 4A. People talk to me and ask me about our scheduling and I wouldn’t want tit any other way, you know we take a 14-1 loss tonight, but I think we’re going to get a lot more out of that then if we play and beat somebody 12-0,” Lutjen said. “I love the competition, the girls relish the competition as well. We’re going to go our there and take it to them the best we can. The girls are confident, they’re going to bounce back, I don’t have any doubt about that.

Lugar echoed her coach’s confidence following the game, drawing on last year’s state tournament run to talk about the team’s attitude.

“We know how good we can play together if we play well as a team and have confidence and relax,” Lugar said. “If we can take that from it, and we know we can compete with anybody if we play on the level that we can.”

With the loss Mid-Prairie stands at 0-1 in the early season and will travel to #1 in class 4A Clear Creek Amana tonight.
