The Columbus girls golf team finished off their season with a third place finish at the district meet. . The Wildcats hosted the district meet and shot a team score of 449, just three strokes behind the qualifying mark of 446 shot by Davis County. Wapello was first with a 369. Head coach Tony Simmons says his girls played well, but struggled on the back nine.

“We did have a lot of good performances by our kids,” Simmons said. “That second nine we just, I don’t know if it was fatigue or concentration or pressure, it’s hard to say exactly. We didn’t play quite as well in a couple spots and it ended up being a close loss.”

Delaney Howell was the top golfer for Columbus shooting a 109, Laura Wittman was second with a 111, Christine Milder shot a 114 and Hannah Parker with a 115 rounded out the scorers. The Varsity team will lost Howell and Wittman next year as they are seniors, but Simmons said he is excited about the potential that Milder and Wittman showed at the district meet.

“Milder and Parker are two juniors that played better yesterday than they’ve been playing,” Simmons said. “It was very good to see that, they just play a little bit above form, and that’s a good thing to see that they came out and did a nice job in their last meet of the year.”

The Columbus girls are done with their season, but the Columbus boys will be playing at their district meet to qualify for state at Geneva Country Club in Muscatine.
