The Washington softball team grabbed a couple of wins last night as they complete the sweep of Mt. Pleasant this season.
Washington needed to sweep in order to have a shot at a conference title, or at the least a share of it, and that is just what they did winning the first game 3-1 and the second one 16-8.
Head coach Angie Shrader says she let her girls know that these were two must win games.
“We had to put ourselves in position to possibly still win a conference championship or at least tie for one,”Shrader said. “I told them this is a must win, if you don’t you could put yourself from going from maybe first place down to third place, the fate is in your hands if you want to make sure that second place is maybe the best you get you’re going to go out and fight and earn it.”
Washington now has four conference losses on the season.
Fairfield and Keokuk play last night as well and split giving Keokuk five conference loses on the season and Fairfield three, so with Mt. Pleasant still left to play if Fairfield splits with Mt. Pleasant the Demons will be co-champions, but if Mt. Pleasant finds a way to do what no Southeast Iowa Conference team has done this year and sweeps Fairfield, the Demons will win the conference.
Washington has a few more games on the scheduled and Shrader says they will help them through the tournament.
“Seeing different types of teams will only make us that much stronger for who we possibly may see in regionals” Shrader said. “Hopefully we will learn a few of our lessons of not taking some teams for granted and playing every out of every innings, and for us as an offensive team we know that we have the power to possibly score anywhere from three to eight runs an inning and we know any team can do that to us as well.”
The Demons go to Mt. Vernon for their final scheduled games on the season today.
