The Washington Demons survived the heat and both games against Mt. Pleasant.
The Demons and Panthers played their first game in close to 100 degree weather and made it the longest game of the year for the Demons going nine full innings before the Demons Colin Steele reached home after a drive to short stop by Tanner Knupp caught Joey Vaughn off guard for the walk off error.
In the second game Colin Steele took the mound for the Demons and struggled a little early on with a ground rule double given up on the lead off batter and then an error by Steele helped Vaughn score. Steele pitched three 6-3 plays after that though ending the inning.
Washington stepped up for their first inning and got two on quickly with Steele and Tanner Knupp before T.J. Rausch came up with a big two run triple. Rausch also scored on a passed ball making the score 3-1, and that is how it would stay until the fourth.
The Panthers chipped away at the lead scoring one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the lead once again, but the Demons weren’t done as they put up a big sixth inning themselves to take a 6-5 lead, and that is how it would finish.
Steele went all seven, five strikeouts only one walk, five runs given up but just three of them earned after the Demons committed nine defensive errors.
Head coach Nathan Miller says he was pleased with how his team played, despite the errors.
“Tonight was a challenge on every facet that we have ever played on, the heat, humidity, extended inning game and both tight games,” Miller said. “I’m just so proud of our kids and how they just kept with it, this is a true team sweep tonight.”
Miller says his team is currently into the system and ready to play their best baseball.
“We have a good group of boys right now that have bought into the system and continue to work hard,” Miller said. “We’re in the dog days of summer, we’re on the back end of the season and some of the drills that we do are kind of boring, but these guys have stuck with it and are sticking with it, because they see the results and they see what happens when you continue to work and have a positive approach about it.”
