The official start of summer begins this evening, making today the year’s longest day with over 15 hours of sunlight.  KCII WeatherEye Meteorologist Sam Dunaiski says today is called the Summer Solstice when the earth is tilted more toward the sun providing us with the longer daylight hours.

He says the temperatures tend to be warmer as well with the average temperatures being their warmest during late July and into August because of the sun’s rays are hitting this part of the world more directly this time of year.

The official start to summer is at 6:09 Central Time tonight.
