One night after a loss to rival Regina Mid-Prairie put disappointment in their rear view mirror with an impressive 12-0, three inning win over Cedar Valley Conference foe North Cedar Wednesday night in Kalona. The game was scoreless after one but the floodgates opened in the second as the Hawks posted seven runs on six hits in the frame including a three run bomb from Felicia Schulty and a three RBI triple from Kaitlyn Kaalberg. In total Mid-Prairie sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. Following the game Mid-Prairie Head Coach Justin Lutjen broke down the approach to Mid-Prairie solid contact at the plate.

“We hit the ball hard tonight, they didn’t. It was odd they started a pitcher, started a new one in the second inning and then brought the first one back, and I don’t know if it was because we put seven on the relief pitcher,” Lutjen said. “ The girls adjusted and hit the ball right on the nose tonight, it was a great bounce back victory after dropping one to Regina last night.”

“That’s what we’ve been looking for, at the beginning of the year we were hitting the ball hard and the last week were were popping up quite a big and not getting the solid contact that we were looking for. We just keep stressing the same thing good swings, try to get on top, and tonight the girls took that with them to the bats and did a great job.”

The Golden Hawks would finish things with five more in the third, the final runs scoring on another triple with the bases loaded, this time from starter Olivia Lugar. Lugar recorded the win in the circle shutting out North Cedar on two hits. Offensively Mid-Prairie posted ten hits as a team in the shortened game led by three RBI apiece from Lugar, Schulty and Kaalberg. Michelle Erwin was two for two with an RBI and two runs scored. Erwin spoke in the post game show about the concise approach of the Golden Hawk offense.

“Hard solid hits straight to the ground just trying to score runners in,” Erwin said.

Mid-Prairie is now 10-8 on the year 3-2 in the Cedar Valley Conference and will travel to Tipton tonight for Conference play.
