A new food icon that was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is celebrating a milestone.  This icon called “MyPlate” was created one year ago as a way to simplify the message of making more healthful food choices.  Nancy Adrian with the Washington County Extension says this program is to make it easier to identify what foods to eat and what portions.

She says half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables, the other half whole grains and part of the diet should be dairy.  In addition to the portion sizes, nutrition messages of balancing calories and what foods to increase and decrease go along with the MyPlate program.
