Flag Day is observed each year on June 14th – the day in 1777 that the Continental Congress approved the “stars and stripes” design of the American Flag and this year, the Washington Chapter of “Daughters of the American Revolution” and the Boy Scouts are hosting a Flag Day event as part of Thursday Night Live tonight.  Julie Beenblossom with the DAR says this ceremony has been happening for more than 100 years.  She says the Boy Scouts will be presenting the Colors which will be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem.

Beenblossom says the Boy Scouts will also be collecting old flags for proper disposal.  She adds they hold a ceremony each year as close as they can to Flag Day at the Cabin in Sunset Park, but they are taking advantage of the audience already at the Farmers Market tonight instead.  This observance begins at 5:15 tonight at the bandstand in Central Park.
