The Washington Demons host the Mid- Prairie Golden Hawks tonight in baseball action. The theme for tonight’s game is strikeout cancer, a special game where the Demons will be wearing pink uniforms and playing for someone they know who has or has had cancer. The game is also in support of the relay for life.

Head coach Nathan Miller says it is a way to see that there is more happening than just baseball.

“It’s an opportunity for us to be a part of raising money, raising awareness and helping out relay for life,” Miller said. “We’re doing a lot of things that are going to be fun for the kids, but also acknowledging those people or individuals that have battled with cancer and survived, and honoring those that cancer took their life. We want to display that tonight and to be able to support those [people].”

The Demons come in at 6-5 on the season with a team average of .334 and two shy of 100 runs on the season. They have split their last two doubleheaders, and won three of the last five.

Colin Steele will start for the Demons, he is 1-1 has a 3.09 ERA and has a 1/5 walk/strikeout ratio, Miller says he will mix pitching up tonight though. The team’s ERA is 3.80 with 47 walks to 51 strikeouts.

“You know Steele and [Jared] Henry have not thrown since Thursday, last week against Mt. Pleasant, and Steele probably only threw about 30 pitches against them,” Miller said. “I want to get [Steele] some work, but we’re really going to chop it up tonight and get a lot of guys some work, but also still be able to use their arms Thursday and Friday.”

The Golden-Hawks come in swinging .264 as a team with 86 strikeouts, while their pitching staff has an ERA of 5.03 with 79 strikeouts.

The two teams will face off tonight on AM and FM KCII with pregame starting around 6:15 and first pitch around 6:30 but could change due to the pregame ceremonies. The one to count on for local sports coverage is AM and FM KCII.
