Alliant Energy is encouraging customers to voluntarily reduce their energy consumption until 7:00 this evening.  This will help in the reduction of demand on the system says Scott Drzycimski with Alliant.  He says Alliant customers can take an active role in controlling energy use.  Other ways to conserve electricity are:

Turn the air conditioner thermostat to 80 degrees, and make sure all windows and doors are closed when the air conditioner is running.

Where possible, turn off central air conditioners and use fans instead.

Shade windows or close drapes on the south and west sides of the home.

Use heat-generating appliances (ovens, dishwashers and laundry appliances) after 9 p.m.

Turn off non-essential lighting, appliances, and electrical equipment, such as dehumidifiers, hot tubs and waterbeds.

Turn down electric water heaters to between 95 and 105 degrees.

Avoid opening refrigerators and freezers more than necessary.

Avoid using range tops and ovens to prepare meals. Instead, use a microwave oven or outdoor grill.
