Highland Carries Momentum into Second Round Game

The Highland Huskies look to continue winning in the Regional tournament as they travel to West Branch tonight to play West Branch.

The Huskies won their first round game over Tipton 1-0 and will get to play a team that has had a bye through the first round.

Head coach Carrie Weiland says she hopes it is an advantage, as her girls would think was weird not to play, but with the fourth of July falling on a Wednesday both teams risk tired girls, but not the Huskies, as long as they listened to their coach.

“I’m a real stickler about expecting them to be home and not staying in the sun to long, not getting sun burnt, which is a big deal for me and hydrating,” Weiland said. “I sent out a text last night making sure that they hit their curfew of 11:30, and I hope they did, I hope they went out watched fireworks and then went home and went to bed, but you never know their kids and you just try to guide them as best as you can.”

Highland is hitting .322 and their pitching staff has an ERA of 2.58 and opponents are hitting .257 off of them.

West Branch is hitting .263 with their pitching staff giving up a .263 batting average to opponents.

Weiland says they will pitch Mariah Freel, and that everything from her injury is doing better.

“She had a sprained wrist, and that seems to be healed up, she wraps it up and sticks it in her glove and did a really good job the other night,” Weiland said.” We can go a lot of places with [Freel] we just have to believe in each other and just make sure our defense is there so we can take it one game at a time.”

These two teams face off in round two tonight.
