Now that the children have started school, health officials are reminding parents of the importance of avoiding back problems in children.  Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health says backpacks are designed to distribute weight.  She says the heaviest items in the backpack should be in the center and students should use backpacks that contain two straps.

Fisher says using just one strap can lead to curvature of the spine.  She notes the weight of the items in the backpack should be between 10 to 20 percent of the child’s weight.  To find out more information regarding backpack safety, contact Washington County Public Health.
