A local farmer was recently recognized for his environmentally friendly farming methods. Rob Stout was one of the many Iowans to receive the Farm Environmental Leader Award at this years State Fair.

Stout utilizes many techniques that reduce farming’s impact on the environment, including no-till farming, terraces, buffer strips, and planting cover crops over the winter to reduce erosion. He also helped form the West Fork Crooked Creek Watershed Club, a group of farmers that check nitrogen levels in the watershed and in their corn to see if they’re using too much.

Stout adds he received a certificate signed by the Governor and the Secretary of Agriculture along with a sign he can put on his property.
