A statewide program that was held locally last year, has received national recognition. Lynn Fisher from Washington County Public Health says they have been working with the I-WALK program which promotes fitness by identifying safe and accessible walking routes. She says the Centers for Disease Control has recognized this program as a model walking program to the rest of the county.
Fisher says walks were conducted around the elementary schools in Kalona, Wellman and around Lincoln Elementary in Washington. The walks found various barriers students face when walking to and from school such as a busy street, a wide intersection or scary dogs.
Fisher says the information from these walks help to apply for grants to the Safe Routes to School Program funded by the Iowa Transportation Commission to remedy those barriers.
