During this hot and humid Iowa summer many people found themselves cranking up the air conditioner to escape the sweltering heat.  The Iowa Utilities Board has a few tips to lower your energy bill while still staying comfortable in the high summer temps.  The IUB recommends utilizing shades, drapes, and sunscreens over windows.

It’s estimated during summer, 50 percent of the heat that builds in a home comes from solar heat. Strategically placed fans can make inside air feel cooler, and increase effectiveness of central and window air conditioners, so you should be able to turn the air conditioner down or off when using fans.

Also, waiting to use heat producing appliances like ovens, stoves, and dishwashers when it is cooler in the late evening or early morning can be effective.  For more tips on energy saving, contact your utility provider.
