The Washington Demon volleyball team won their first conference match last night over Keokuk.

The Demons swept the Chiefs winning all three sets.

Head coach Jeff Spenner talked after the game about the win.

“The conference is tough, and to get a win out here even though it was close [is good],” Spenner said. “One thing I liked was that the girls had to fight, and get over that hump and come back and win, so overall I thought it was a good night.”

Washington had a few times on the night that they had to fight back, including being down by six points in the second set, and giving up three straight aces, before coming back and winning the set.

Stephanie Fishback was the leading killer for the Demons with 11 on the night, while Beth Dillon had nine and Sam Ellingson had seven.

Lauren Kimball setup 27 points in the match, and both Ellingson and Fishback had 24 or more digs on the night.

Spenner says Fishback’s play starting in the second set was outstanding.

“[Fishback] did a phenomenal job hitting tonight, and it helps when you get up high and snap properly good things are going to happen, yeah they got a couple of blocks on her, but their big blocker was in the middle, so we kept telling them to get the feed it outside,” Spenner said. “To me you keep feeding the strengths and keep going off of that.”

The Demons are now 4-7 overall, and 1-2 in the conference. They have a bye this week from conference play, and will play next on Saturday at a tough Ottumwa tournament, featuring Mt. Pleasant, Ottumwa and Davis County.
