Warning reminders are being shared to hog confinement operators about the risk of fire and explosions.  Nancy Adrian with the Washington County Extension says liquid manure in pits underneath these facilities decompose slowly, and releases two flammable gases.

She says operators should review their emergency plans, turn off electrical power to non-ventilation equipment before pumping or agitating and keep people out of the building during pumping and agitation.

Adrian adds it’s important to run fans at maximum speed.  For more information contact the Washington County Extension office.
