The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks avoided falling victim to a trap game Friday night in Columbus by dispatching the Wildcats 35-0. The Golden Hawks opened up the scoring midway through the first quarter after an Elliot Runciman interception set Mid-Prairie up with good field position on the Columbus side of the field. Seven plays and 47 yards later Reid Miller snuck in from one yard out. After the Golden Hawks turned Columbus away on their Essaa Baylor scored from 14 yards out capping a four play 65 yard drive and Mid-Prairie took a 14-0 lead to the locker room. In the second half the Hawks went up by three scores on their second possession with their first of two passing scores from Reid Miller to Elliot Runciman in the score of the endzone from 10 yards out. The Golden Hawks put the game out of reach with two fourth quarter touchdowns the first from Canaan Powell on a nifty 13 yard run the second another connection from Miller to Runcimon with 2:23 left in the game to put the continuous clock in motion. Following the game Head Coach Pete Cavanagh spoke after the game about the importance of big plays with limited possessions.

“We made some big plays, I think we were more successful going outside than running inside, they were going to plug up the inside,” Cavanagh said. “They have some good defensive players, our speed hurt them on the outside. I’d like to get our passing game going a little bit, we struggled blocking at times and miss a few receivers, but when we did throw it and did have time we made some nice throws and catches, and that is what we need to do, we need to be balanced, especially going into next week,”

With the win Mid-Prairie is now 5-1 on the year, 3-0 in district play and has won their last five consecutive. The victory also sets up a first place showdown next week in Wellman as the Hawks welcome undefeated #2 Mediapolis to town for Homecoming.
