The next few months will be used to iron out the details for a new 4 day school week at WACO schools. Tom Ferguson is an English Teacher at WACO High School and helped form the committee that looked at the pros and cons of a shortened week.

Ferguson shares that all plans for the 4+1 school week, including the calendar and daily schedule, will be presented to the board at the yearly Saturday session on December 1st.

He explains that the tentative plan is to have four days of instruction with an additional hour each day. The fifth day will be used to focus on students’ individual needs including remedial classes, duel credit and enrichment classes and internships at local businesses.

He adds that this is the 1st time in Iowa history the Department of Education has awarded a district a 4 day week. He says this is because the focus of the shorter week was providing students a better education as opposed to saving money.
