A chapter of a nationwide organization is reminding women to be proactive with their health. During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women over the age of 40 are encouraged to get a mammogram.
Kiersten Peck, Senior Community Relations Director with the American Cancer Society, says the sooner you find the cancer, the better. She adds that the 5 year survival rate is 99% for patients who were diagnosed before it spread from the breasts.
In addition to spreading awareness about the disease, the American Cancer Society is also dedicated to making advancements in treatment. Peck shares that currently the organization is funding 230 research grants totaling over $82 million dollars.
