Those planting fall seeded cover crops and forage crops this year should be aware of new reporting requirements. According to Deanna Meier with the Washington County Farm Service Agency, if you’re planting small grains like oats and wheat or if you have hay ground, you need to have those acres certified by December 15th, instead of waiting until June 30th of next year.
This will coincide with the deadline for buying insurance for those crops.
Cover crops offer multiple benefits including reduced erosion and nitrogen runoff.
