In honor of wrestling great Dan Gable, Governor Terry Branstad has declared this Dan Gable Day. Over the span of his career Gable won three state wrestling titles in high school, two NCAA titles at Iowa State University and in 1972 he took home an Olympic gold medal.
While coaching the University of Iowa’s wrestling team, they won 15 NCAA championships and 21 consecutive Big Ten titles. Mid-Prairie wrestling coach Justin Garvey says that in his childhood and throughout his life Dan Gable meant wrestling.
He adds that he’s glad Gable got this recognition, not only for what he’s done in Iowa, but for his accomplishments nationally and internationally.
