A team’s character isn’t measured by a loss, but how they respond to it. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks left little doubt with their metal tested Friday night in their first game after falling on homecoming to #2 Mediapolis. In a game heard on KCIIradio.com Mid-Prairie scored on six of their eight first half possessions to fly past the West Burlington Falcons 49-0. The Golden Hawks posted 21 in the first quarter, the first points coming on a 27 yard pass from Reid Miller to Elliot Runciman, the final two came on the ground with a pair of five yard touchdown runs from Eessa Baylor and Canaan Powell. The second frame was more of the same, the Hawks scored first on a one yard sneak by Reid Miller before they went back to the air scoring again on a 37 yard shovel pass from Miller to Baylor and finally Mid-Prairie made the score 42-0 with 90 seconds to play in the first half when Miller found Nick Stimson on a deep slant from 43 yards out for the score.

With the 42-0 lead at half the Golden Hawks used the second half to get lots of players on the depth chart game experience. Mid-Prairie would finish the scoring on the night with two minutes left in the game when Austin Schlabaugh found the endzone from nine yards out. Mid-Prairie was led by Reid Miller who in his action on the night was 11 of 13 for 209 yards and 3 scores. With the win Mid-Prairie clinches a playoff birth and improves to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in district five. The win also sets up a showdown next week in Wellman with West Liberty who is also 4-1 in district. The winner will host a first round playoff game, finishing second in the district. Coach Pete Cavanagh spoke last night in West Burlington about his teams performance and the big game set up for next Friday.

“You can throw and catch a little bit better when you block up front, and I thought our guys up front played really well, and it just happen that we were able to get some good passing lanes, Reid had a good game tonight,” Cavanagh said. “We told the guys in the huddle after the game that this week is basically the first week of the playoffs, we;re playing for a lot, we’re playing for home field in the post season, and No. 2 in the district means quite a bit, West Liberty is a good team we know that, so we’re going to have to have a good week of preparation.”

You can catch all of the action between the Comets and the Golden Hawks Friday with pregame at 7 and kickoff at 7:30 live from Wellman on KCIIradio.com and delayed broadcast on AM and FM KCII following the Washington game.
