Third times a charm for Winfield- Mt Union as they advance in the 1A volleyball tournament after beating New London 3-2.

WMU won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-22, but New London didn’t give up forcing a game five after winning sets three and four 26-24 and 25-17.

The Wolves didn’t let another one slip away from them against New London though, as they won set five 15-11 and the match.

Shelby Therme led the team in kills with 22, while Katie Benson had 46 assists, Nicole Escher had four blocks and Alicia Escher and Therme both had 30 digs.

Head coach Dave Pieart said winning the match took a combination of both passion and a level head.

“We were very much of the opinion that we had not played our best match against them in previous games, so we tried very hard this week at getting of to a quick start, playing smarter than we had, and controlling the energy and enthusiasm that we had to try and not do too much,” Pieart said.

WMU plays round three on Friday against Sigourney who were also winners last night over Twin Cedars 3-2.
