The Washington Demons hit a long road trip tonight to go to Winterset and play in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.
Washington got past Norwalk last Wednesday, but Winterset won the district in the final game of the season, beating Pella, a team that Washington lost to in overtime.
The Demons are 7-3, with eight touchdown passes and 867 yards through the air, but running is where they succeed most on offense with 2318 yards and 33 touchdowns.
The Huskies are a more balanced offense, with 1166 yards through the air and 12 touchdowns, but 10 interceptions. Running the ball they have 1858 yards and 19 touchdowns.
The Demons first team defense let in their first points since September against Norwalk.
Head coach Randy Shrader says stopping their running back is essential to controlling their offense.
“Well we definitely have to keep the ball out of [Noah Kaidenberg’s] hands and the way to do that is sustained drives and put some points on the board, this could come down to a field goal, with both have pretty decent field goal kickers and I think once that ball is around the 15 yard line we’re going to kick a field goal,” Shrader said. “[Kaidenberg’s} the key, if we can get him corralled and hold him to a limited amount of yards, he’s going to get his carries, but if we can limit his amount of yards and no explosive plays, I think we’re going to have a chance.”
