The Winfield – Mt. Union volleyball team finished in second place this weekend at the New London tournament to New London.
The Wolves won their pool by beating West Burlington 21-17, dropping the second set 21-18, and then winning set three 15-8. WMU swept the rest of the pool beating Harmony 21-4, 21-6 and Highland 21-12 and 24-22.
WMU moved on to the placing rounds and won their first one against English Valleys 25-12 and 25-11, but dropped the Championship round to New London, dropping set one 25-22, winning set two 25-20, and then dropping set three 15-8.
Erica Robinson had 47 kills on the weekend and six blocks, while Katie Benson had 91 assists, Shelby Therme had 40 digs and Anna Crawford had 10 aces while only missing three serves.
Head coach Dave Pieart said second place is always good, but beating New London was the goal, the team just got down too much too early to make a comeback.
“We just got off to slow starts in each of the three games we played against them,” Pieart said. “You can’t do that against a really quality team, we made a huge comeback in game two, but you can’t count on making huge comebacks in all three.”
WMU plays Lone Tree tomorrow.
