It’s the battle for the county tonight on KCII as the Washington girls meet up with the Mid-Prairie girls for a ranked basketball game.

No. 10 Washington comes into the game 2-0 after beating both Ottumwa on Saturday and Eddyville-Blakesburg earlier last week.

Washington is led by a couple of players in Beth Dillon and Grace Redlinger who have both led in scoring for either game. Dema Giardino has also become a scoring threat as a second shooter along with Lauren Kimball.

Washington head coach Phil Long says the key to tonight’s game is composure

“I think our mental approach, we’re going to play in a hostile environment, it’s usually about 100 degrees in that gym when you get up there, and it is a small floor, with the people and the bleachers right on you, and it is a boy girl double header which means it is a good crowd,” Long said. “I know that Mid-Prairie is looking to try to knock us off and keep their season rolling right along as the ninth ranked team, and at the same time our kids would like to go knock off a ranked opponent too to give us a little more credence in the 4A bunch.”

The No. 9 Golden Hawks are 1-0 after a win over West Liberty.

Mid-Prairie is led by Mallory McArtor with 13 points, followed by Megan Redlinger and Mariah Swartzentruber who both have eight.

Redlinger also ads eight steals to her point totals.

Head coach Marc Pennington said his team needs to handle the pressure of the Demon defensive attack

“I think the first thing is we just have to handle the pressure, they are going to through multiple defenses at you, we have to recognize that and slow things down, we like to get out and run, but we need to slow down and see what they are doing, and minimize the careless turnovers,” Pennington said, “The second thing, they’re going to shoot the ball, so we’re going to have to make sure we get body on body and get the long rebounds and be physical on the glass, we did not rebound well against West Liberty, so that’s a focus for us.”

Washington and Mid-Prairie play tonight at Mid-Prairie at 6:00.
