To properly recognize those who’ve served their communities by preparing them for the worst-case scenario for the past 50 years, the Governor has proclaimed this week Iowa Emergency Management Association Week. First established in 1962 as the Iowa Civil Defense Directors Association, the agency became known as Emergency Management as its role evolved. According to Washington and Keokuk Emergency Management Coordinator, Larry Smith, its initial purpose was to prepare the public for a man-made threat, but now also deals with natural disasters.
