With more motorists hitting the road for Thanksgiving, local law enforcement is taking part in a statewide effort to keep the roads safe before and after the holiday.

According to Washington Police Officer, Shawn Ellingson, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau sTEP-Up program encourages agencies to step up traffic enforcement with a focus on seatbelt use and speed limit compliance. He says the overall goal is to save lives and to get you to your Thanksgiving gathering safely.

He says as far as seat belt use goes, Washington understands its importance. A survey conducted by Ellingson last week showed that almost 96% of drivers are using safety belts, compared to 92% statewide.
